Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to inform you that THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON
COMMUNICATION AND REALITIES: THE IMPACTS OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION
TECHNOLOGIES ON SOCIAL REALITIES will be held in Barcelona (Spain) on 18,
19 and 20 May 2000

We are on the eve of a new millennium, marked by the massive introduction
of information and communication technologies into all areas of social and
private life. The magnitude of these changes is fostering the emergence of
new realities which are adding to the individual's sense of uncertainty and
are transforming societies in terms of deep structure as well as external
forms of organisation. The analysis of these changes involves serious
problems due to the complexity of the process and due to its multifaceted,
deeply interconnected nature.

The First International Conference on Communication and Reality seeks to
bring a multidisciplinary perspective to approach these questions raised by
the above-mentioned technological change. The Conference will approach this
question from four fundamental viewpoints: the economic viewpoint (exchange
of goods and services), the cultural viewpoint (exchange of symbols), the
philosophical-anthropological viewpoint (exchange pf ideas) and the ethical
viewpoint (exchange of values). And all of those, influenced by the recent
innovations in the field of communication, the evolution of which has
surpassed its initial technical-scientific dimension and ended up provoking
a profound cultural and social change of planetary proportions.
