Re:move/ *candy factory @ Yokohama Triennial

Nunotani Building
Takuji Kogo + Mike Bode

" The land mass of Japan is located on top of the point of collision between
the western Pacific continental plate and the Pacific oceanic plate.
Friction from the subterranean movement of these two plates into each other
has, over millions of years, created the island of Japan through volcanic
activity below the ocean surface. Today this activity continues and from the
tectonics of plate movement produce earthquake activity. Surface waves which
move through the striated landscape in and around Tokyo periodically
compress and expand the continious plate structure of the Edogawa district.
Thus within this zone the Nunotani building is seen as a metaphoric record
of the continious waves of movement as the plates overlap.

Simultaneous to this analogue, over project represents an attempt to rethink
the symbolism of the vertical office building. Traditionally the vertical
building had two metaphoric connotations, the one as a metaphor of
anthropocentrism - the human vertebrae as upright, symmetrical, and skeletal
- - the other, a symbol of power and dominance, in particular
phallogocentrism, the sexual structure of power and dominance. Our building
symbolically attempts to undermine these two centrisms, first by producing a
building that is not metaphorically skeletal or striated, but rather made up
of a shell of vertically compressed and translated plates, and second, by
producing an image hovering somewhere in between an erect and a "limp"
condition. As such the building provokes a discussion which is already
commonly understood in related discourse."

You are invited to view my recent artwork, "Redeeming the Gene,
Molding the Golem, Folding the Protein," a mythic parody that
challenges current genetic engineering techniques, at
www.sonyarapoport.net.

After being considered a source of female evil for thousands of years,
Lilith and Eve reinvent themselves by creating an ethical gene
according to ancient Hebraic Kabbalah ritual. With this new gene they
mold a golem, an artificial anthropoid.

The kabbalah gene displaces the artist's gene that Eduardo Kac
invented in his artwork, "Genesis."

THE NEW ALBUM: "Under the Influence" by Dj Spooky that Subliminal Kid

The record is called "Under the Influence"... the artist is called
"Dj Spooky that Subliminal Kid"... the mix is yet another sound art
piece directed out at a world in geo-political upheaval... more than
that, its a sound piece based on ruins and resilience, sound and
silence - aural mnemonics from the edge of the 4th world... In this
era of confusion and relentless corruption at all levels of world
culture, sometimes music is the only thing to make us all realize
that we have something in common: humanity.

So that's what the new album is about:
synchronia/synchronicity - pulling all the patterns together with
sound... there's tracks from Moby, Talvin Singh, Ryuichi Sakamoto,
Future Sound of London, electro wild stylz from Anti-Pop Consortium,
Phoenix Orion and Dj Hive, art music maestros Sonic Youth and Arto
Lindsay, Dj Singe and MC Verb who do that legendary event in NYC
called Soundlab... and there's even turntablists like Mix Master Mike
from the Beastie Boys and his Automator remix (Automator is the
fellow behind the "Gorrilaz" virtual band), Kut Masta Kurt and his
project with Kool Keith and Motion Man a.k.a. "The Masters of
Illusion" and Dj DeckWreckka out of London, and the poet laureate of
experimental hip-hop, Saul Williams... The album also features some
of Dj Spooky's remixes and collaborations with Sussan Deyhim - master
of digital persian music on a global scale...

The idea here, as always, is to flip the script on contemporary
music and art to build bridges between scenes, zones, and styles...
you could call it global pan humanism or something... Whatever the
name, just come on by and check the vibe: there'll be people from all
tribes and affiliations, rich, poor, weird, normal, literary...
whatever... its a carnival of all souls open to the sounds... ....
another 21st Century wildstyle situation...

Time: This FRIDAY - 9pm until whenever...

Place: The Lunatarium - Jay & Water Streets in Dumbo Brooklyn - top
floor... really big industrial space with a view of all three bridges
between the city....

Visual Material: The event will also be a special screening of Carrie
mae Weems response to the World Trade Center tragedy: a video called
"A Moment of Silence"

Repeat/Complete:
portion of the proceeds will go to the amazing photo installation of
"Here is New York" - images of the World trade Tragedy made to help
the orphans of the terror... learning from this to build
understanding for a new world... a democracy of images to help the
CHILDRENS AID SOCIETY 911 FUND - check the info at:
www.hereisnewyork.org

the line up for the event/situation is as follows:

DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid - a character out of William S.
Burroughs "Nova Express" and Paul D. Miller's upcoming novel "Flow my
Blood the Dj Said"....

Dj Assault - Detroit wildstylz master of "Ghetto Tech" - digital info
officer of the starship "Chocolate City"...

Dj Duane from that amazing record store called "Other Music"

Lure - a band that blurs... artrock for the 21st century

Arto Lindsay - Noise/No Wave/Guitar crazy guy

Sussan Deyhim - she's from Iran and does wild stuff with computers...
the darling of the artworld... composer of the amazing music for
Shirin Neshat's films.... she's going to do a live set with Dj
Spooky around midnite...

Dj Singe - the power vixen behind Soundlab - the legendary NYC art
event that still has the conventional artworld scratching its head...
is it art or music?

and several others....

'Manovich has given us a book, the book, we had hoped for. We can disagree
with it. We can and will find other examples, different to the wonderful
range of games, net.art, installations and movies he works with. Cinema
theorists and historians will enjoy the claims that all of this novelty is
the flowering of a potentiality latent in film since its first steps, or
before in the phantasmagorias and thaumatropes of the 18th and 19th
centuries. The ravishing breadth of digital reference is one of the books
strengths, and there's more than enough here to suggest to any instructor
that the ideas can be debated in evolving contexts. If MIT Press relent in
the usual practice of holding significant new titles in hardcover only for
a year or two at a stretch, the book will be in every library, and students
everywhere will be clutching it like Mao's Red Book, Diamat of the
Immaterialist generation. Best of all, after 'Languages of the New Media',
we can argue on our own terrain.' (Sean Cubitt, University of Waikato, New
Zealand, im Leonardo Digital Review)

mi 17.oktober LOUNGE club-abend
here it is again

do 18. oktober Ausstellungseröffnungen

1 the last thing you do...

2 REAL CRIME Architektur & Verbrechen (English version below)
Crime does not pay!

Live TV-Show

Urban Control - ‚Belfast in Graz’ (English version below)
Diskurses.
Berlin.

Urban Contol - ‚Kunst & Urban Politics‘ (English version below)
aggressives Modell in Stein gemauerter städtischer Kontrolle.
Staatsarchitektur, deren Entsprechungen >hier< weitaus unkenntlicher
scheinen. Dies formuliert sich eher in juristischen Grenzziehungen,
sozialpolitischen Bastionen und tagtäglichen Normalitätsphantasmen.

REAL CRIME
Architecture & Crime

Crime does not pay! Wrongly, writes Karl Marx, crime pays off certainly
? not always for the criminal or his victim, probably, however, for the
society. According to Marx the criminal produces not only the crime, but
also all measures been directed against the crime. He produces the
police, the criminal law, the criminal justice and the prison, but as
well all forms of criminal coverage: whether in the "fine arts", in
literature and theatre, in scientific publications or in mass media. The
fear evoked by real or only imagined crime is reflected in innumerable
preventive constructional, architectural and town planning measures:
Fortification against the enemies outwardly, control architectures
against the enemies from inside.

URBAN CONTROL #1
Belfast from >here<
The civil war-like siege of Northern Ireland stands for an aggressive
model of urban control ? fixed in stone. The lines of conflicts in
Belfast are marked quite clearly. There are obviously divided
residential areas - mostly of the working class or, rather, of the
unemployed class - as well as mixed terrain (shopping city centre,
entertainment district, university quarter, residential areas). In
addition office complexes are sealed off by fences and security guards
just opposite the shipyard which had built the Titanic and now are close
to bankruptcy.
The separatism in Northern Ireland, manifested into stone, is a state
architecture whose correspondences seem >here< much more unrecognizable.
This formulates itself in establishing legal borders, sociopolitical
bulwarks and daily phantasmas of normality.

From: SCP-New York <notbored@panix.com>
Subject: report by the NY SCP

One and all:

- -- The NY SCP has performed twice in the last week:

http://www.notbored.org/9oct01.html
http://www.notbored.org/11oct01.html

In both instances, the group performed within the sight of numerous police
officers, National Guard Units, etc with no problems. Both performances
well received by audiences.

- -- The group has also continued to give its walking tours of heavily
surveilled neighborhoods in Manhattan, http://www.notbored.org/scowt.html
despite: A) the climate of fear and ignorance; B) increased police/military
presence; C) no newspaper is printing our annoucements of these tours (they
have stopped doing so since 11 Sept 2001); and D) the lowered turn-out that
has resulted (the tours now draw 2 or 3 people at most).

- -- In response to reports that the US government might seize the assets of
any group it deems to be terrorist or supportive of terrorism, we have
added the following caveat about our funding, expenses and assets:

http://www.notbored.org/scp-funding.html

- -- About 10 articles/TV shows about the NY SCP have been placed on the
dead-ends list http://www.notbored.org/dead-ends.html

Most have become "dead-ends" because of the 11 Sept 2001 disasters, that
is, they have used 11 Sept 2001 as an excuse to kill stories they thought
were "risky" to begin with

- -- Two articles have nevertheless made it into print:
