You are kindly invited to the inauguration of the show on the
performance Innesto - Greffe – Graft next December 7th 2002, from 5
p.m. to 7.30 p.m. In the public space Agorà of Valdieri (Cuneo). An
exhibitionn about documents of an original event in the Park of the
Alps Marittime on 09/07/2002; in the Vallone of the Valletta, in
Province of Cuneo. It concerns a show that tells the artistic event
created by two young artists: Domenico Olivero and Stefano Venezia.
On September 7th 2002 in the Vallone della Valletta, in the centre of
the Park of the Alps Marittime, a particular artistic event took place.
A walking during which particular events happened as a scope to create
a sculpture in the shape of a constellation (in this case the Great
Ors).
We attach herewith the nice description by Ornella Calvetti who
participated in the event.

Chronicle of a work of art edited by Ornella Calvetti (responsible
for the Foundation for the Promotion of the Contemporary Art +XARTE)
On Saturday September 7th 2002 in the Valletta Valley, in the Park of
the Alps Marittime, a detailed artistic action created by Domenico
Olivero and Stefano Venezia took place. It concerned the event I Graft -
a constellation on Earth – a particular dynamic intervention of art.
Everybody started the walking, in the late afternoon on a beautiful
summer day. Walking through a nice alpine valley. During the walking we
have created two phases in which the presence of a small but young
group of participants was involved. In the first one, on a beautiful
green lawn, a fascinating installation of red boxes waited for us with
a mysterious and very colorful content, delicate spaces o
exchange between ourselves. In the second, a suggestive series of
silvered gems, pending from the trees of a small grove where we have
offered a present to our intimate to share at home with the beloved
ones. At the end of that journey, in the middle of a fabolus nature
already flushed from the autumn, we arrived to a belvedere where, after
a nice individual test we gave a personal contribution to create a
sculpture in the shape of a constellation. That delicate structure,
inspired by the Great Ors was composed of so many thoughts, alternated
by lit candles that have suggestively dialogued with the sunset by
accompanying us in a magic night.
That artistic event was a new attempt of making art. A proposal to
create an artistic manufactured article but also to look for a dialogue
and a sharing among the presents, everything in a romantic natural
frame.
A moment of sensitivity and poetic reflection to approach the persons
to the fascination of the contemporary art.

A project by BULL.MILETIC for San Francisco Art Commission Market Street Art
in Transit Program
November 15, 2002 to February 14, 2003
Inspired by a quote by Christopher Reeve, "To be a hero is to live the
everyday life," we created a kiosk series that is literally reflective of
everyone who walks past each kiosk. 24 mirrored panels with the appearance
after dusk of lights around the edges evocative of dressing room mirrors
will make a star of every pedestrian. Emphasizing the theatrical aspect of
street life, in this series we consider Market Street as a mirror of the
eclectic nature of the city.
We are very sorry that some of you far from San Francisco wouldn¹t be able

The tidal wave of new security legislation that has
followed the events of 11 September, 2001, have made
a critical examination of information politics in
the network society uncommonly urgent. Thus the
World-InfoCon conference 'The Network Society of
Control' that takes place on 6 and 7 December, 2002,
at De Balie in Amsterdam will provide an
international and interdisciplinary forum that
discusses the latest developments in information
law, policing and surveillance, and intellectual
property rights in the digital domain.
Context
Recently a variety of developments have jeopardized
privacy and civil liberties. First of all, justified
through security concerns following 9-11, police
and enforcement authorities have been given extended
powers, their budgets increased and new legislation
been passed. Particularly in the field of electronic
communications, their rights to intercept and record
data have been strengthened while privacy concerns
have not been taken seriously. Secondly
intellectual property rights have been tightened by
establishing new directives both in the US and the
EU. Those restrict the free use of copyrighted works
and thus hinder the free flow of information that
has long been regarded one of the main
characteristics of the Internet.
All those trends seem contrary to the open and
exchange-based character of communication networks
and raise concerns about security and surveillance.
Yet although the tendencies towards an enforced
control of digital environments is not just a recent
development, after 9-11 it has gained a new meaning,
because it exerts increasing pressure on the
formerly sovereign domains of the individual;
privacy and (informational) self-determination.
Program
World-Info-Con brings together a wide variety of
speakers and participants including international
and well-known researchers, policy makers in the
field of justice, economic and technology policy,
representatives of social interest groups,
intellectual property rights specialist, activists,
journalists and cultural workers including Ben
Bagdikian (US), Konrad Becker (AT), Andrew Bichlbaum
(US), Steve Cisler (US), Darius Cuplinskas (HU),
Bruce Girard, Volker Grassmuck (DE), Chris Hables
Gray (US), Brian Holmes, Steve Kurtz (US), Eveline
Lubbers (NL), Arun Metha (IN), Sheldon Rampton (US),
Thorsten Schilling (DE), Ryan Schoelerman (US),
Joost Smiers (NL), Felix Stalder (CH/CN) and
Christiaan Alberdingk Thijm (NL)that will discuss
issues of surveillance, security and freedom of
networks.
'Security Paranoia in the World-Info-Sphere' (first
day) will focus on the new forms of policing of the
informational domains and some of the more hidden
incentives behind the drive for info-security and
provide a critical analysis of the mechanisms of
public opinion management and disinformation
strategies. The second day 'Building the Digital
Commons' is devoted to the control obsession over
intellectual property and the new limitations
imposed on digital information exchange.
Beyond those immediate and urgent questions of
recent developments in legislation, surveillance and
the implementation of information politics
World-InfoCon also explores the more hidden social
and cultural dimensions of these developments, which
are essential to establishing the frameworks of
future cultural production in the network society.

Sunday-afternoon Patrice Riemens (net-activist) will interview Partha Pratim
Sarker Co-Founder of the Asiatic initiative “Bytes for all”.
The project Bytes for All, originally an initiative of two people from India
and Bangladesh, was established to close the knowledge gap in Southern Asia
and to work toward increasing the availability of information technology.
Several activities included in this project are: organizing campaigns for
price reduction of software, for developing software for children in rural
areas of South Asia, and for the use of freely available systems such as
Linux.
The conversation with Patrice and Partha Pratim Sarker will focus the Bytes
for all -initiative in relation to 'ICTs and Poverty Alleviation' issues and
Transnational Electronic Platforms.

THE VIRTUAL CASE BOOK PROJECT: EVALUATION OF A PROTOTYPE
Launching a Prototype, 9-11 and after: a virtual case book
9-11 and after: a virtual case book (VCB) is a prototype for a series of
web publications, each focused on a specific area of tactical media, based
on ideas developed at the April 2001 Tactical Media workshop at NYU. This
project is part of a broader effort to introduce the ideas and practices
of tactical media into the space of the university, as a tool for teaching
and an opportunity for research. Conceived as a series, the case book
model highlights the situated nature of tactical media, and allows a
consideration of the particular ways in which it is deployed in specific
social circumstances. At the encouragement of our funders, the first case
book focuses on the importance of alternative networks and systems of
communication on September 11, 2001 and immediately thereafter.

Politics of the Ephemeral: Rethinking the Archive
The 9-11 VCB underscores the ephemeral nature of tactical media -- as well
as web-based material more generally. Is it a contradiction in terms to
archive tactical media? How can we best contextualize this material for
pedagogy, analysis, and research? These kinds of questions - generated by
the shift to digital media, the exponential growth of cyber communication,
and the rapid globalization of capital as well as social movements -- are
radically altering archival practices.
How can Tactical Media be preserved and made accessible without altering
the value produced by its ephemerality? What are the issues in design that
facilitate this process?

Tactical Media and Health Activism: The Case of HIV/AIDS
VIRTUAL CASE BOOK #2
This case book is intended to provide an analysis as well as an historical
document of the movements for access to HIV/AIDS medications locally and
globally, activism that began in an age of video and street theater with
groups such as ACT UP, and that has been greatly facilitated more recently
by Internet and web-based communications. The implications of this
growing movement reach far beyond the issue of antiretroviral medications,
especially in light of recent developments in the mapping of the human
genome; the debates about intellectual property emerging out of
international trade agreements; and the increasing influence of patients
who have come to redefine themselves as health activists - a shift that
has been greatly facilitated by new media.
The object of this case book is 1) to collect, organize, frame and present
data in a readily accessible form; 1) to facilitate connection among
activist groups internationally; to 3) bridge divides between academics,
activists, and artists; and 4) to enhance pedagogy on these crucial issues
for HIV/AID and health activism more generally which is changing the
contours of medical practice and the political economy of health care.

The Long View: From ACT UP to the Treatment Action Campaign (and beyond)
It is undeniable that the development of network society and an
information economy have changed the ground upon which a new
internationalist activism can arise. The possibility of organizing
unprecedented numbers of people is at hand. Surprisingly, this possibility
requires that we focus on the constitution of the individual subject as it
arises on a new global terrain.
Digital technologies and the development of networks have certainly made
exchange and organizing among activists all over the world more
efficacious. Yet, there still remain the complexities of inequity and
cultural differences. What are the obstacles and limits of international
organizing that technological optimism often overlooks?

This autobiographical documentary weaves together stories of the current
history of the AIDS epidemic in South Africa and the struggle for access
to medical treatment there, with Bordowitz's personal odyssey as an
activist media maker who has been living with AIDS for over ten years.
Gregg Bordowitz and the group will address the intentions and strategies
that informed Habit, as well as its reception in different cultural and
political contexts. What lessons can be garnered for developing a virtual
case book on the history and contemporary practices of AIDS activism, in
ways that further both knowledge and action?

Drifting through superimposed narratives of two cities at once.
Navigate the fictional third city by walking around Leeds. See
Leeds-Dortmund rewritten via a shared narrative of coincidence and
conjecture, audible and visible at certain points through virtual
windows. Observe the effects of superimposed geographical setting on the
mood and behaviour of yourself and your fellow flaneurs. Discuss.

This event is an experiment in Unitary Urbanism: "the combined use of
art and technology leading to the integrated construction of an

Durch die Suche nach Kriterien zur Optimierung von Mensch-Maschine-Interfaces
gewinnt die Erforschung von Wahrnehmungsprozessen zunehmend an Bedeutung. Das
Symposium "Perception Geographies" widmet sich dem menschlichen Part dieser
Schnittstelle. Es will den Raum untersuchen, den die Wahrnehmung zwischen
Außenweltreiz und innerer Verarbeitungsebene aufspannt. Dabei stellt es natur-
und geisteswissenschaftliche Forschungsansätze vor und diskutiert deren
Konsequenzen für Kunst und Gesellschaft.

Dr. Miklos Kiss gibt einen Überblick zu aktuellen Forschungen und
Anwendungsmöglichkeiten auf dem Gebiet der Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion und
präsentiert insbesondere die Projekte des neu gegründeten "Generation Research
Program" der LMU München.

Dr. Carolin Länger stellt exemplarisch für das neue kultursoziologische
Interesse am Wahrnehmungsapparat die junge Disziplin "Disability Studies" vor:
Trotz Begeisterung an der Erweiterung des menschlichen Körpers durch Technologie
und Euphorie für Cyborgs und Androide ist der "voll funktionsfähige" Teil der
Menschheit erstaunlich wenig an den Besonderheiten so genannter Behinderter
interessiert. Am Beispiel einer ethnographischen Untersuchung von Blindheit
illustriert Dr. Carolin Länger, wie "Behinderungen" genutzt werden können, um
kulturelles Basiswissen über "die Sinne" zu entdecken.

Von zentraler Bedeutung für den modernen Menschen sind Gefühle. Neben einem
Überblick zur Geschichte der Emotionalität thematisiert Dr. Martin Korte die
Bedeutung der Emotionsforschung für Bild- und Medienwissenschaften und bezieht

City One , a cross-disciplinary conference on the urban experience in South
Asia will take place between the 9th and 11th of January, 2003. This will be
a significant gathering of scholars and practitioners from different fields
and we hope it will open up new agendas for urban research on South Asian
cities. The conference is organized by the Sarai programme of the Centre for
the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi.
The response to the conference has been tremendous. We now have 6 plenary
sessions and 18 panels spread across three days. Check the web link which

If you wish to attend the conference be sure to pre-register with us. We
have very few slots left for those registering, and there is limited space.
The costs are Rs 300 for the general public and Rs 100 for students. You may
pay the amount on the morning of the 9th .
