<nettime> matrix thread

regarding the direction of the matrix, i think a lot
of where it's going is given in the short animated
"trailers" that have been preceding other films. (has
anyone else seen these?)
they open with a simulated sword fight between a guy
that looks like morpheus and a "very fit" woman of
"Eastern" descent. the sword fight turns out to be
erotic foreplay as the "combatants" lose their clothes
with each swipe of the digital swords. the digital
rendering is highly photo-realistic, highlighted with
extreme close ups of skin (a notable rear close-up
shot of the woman in a thong being one example).
whatever philosophical and literary directions this is
taking, it is surely one of the masculine persuasion,
as most of the intellectual roots (whether
post-structural or thoroughly modernist) are.
the (female) cinematic body can now be competely
designed after phantasy, the whole image now being
airbrushed. talk about the material implications of
simulacra.
you got your realistic high-tech animation, your
machismo fight sequences and explosions, and designer
babes.
who cares about philosophy?
best,
ryan
