It is a controversial matter ??? imho, regional elections in a "peripheral" region like Friuli should not been taken as a good test for national politics.

Many factors should be taken in consideration, however.

The candidature of Rodota' de facto built up a transversal front of
progressive people who recognised in this figure "another" possible
left, solidly anchored on values as laicism, digital rights, defense of
the commons, and direct democracy???. the winning candidate in Friuli
was one of the few Democrats openly sustaining Rodot?? against its
party, and the victory in that election could be (optimistically) also
interpreted as a result of its "heretical" position leaning towards the
5s candidate.

the 5star movement seem to lose consent from his supporters by not
having supported a coalition with the Democrats, but on the other hand
after the presidential election seems potentially to gain support from
many voters of PD that after the infamous behaviour of their
representatives sweared they won't do it anymore and even burned their
party cards.

Also, to be considered is to what extent SEL (Left, Ecology and Freedom)
which broke its alliance with the PD after last days will be able to
attract all those floating votes from 5S and PD...
