<nettime> machine learning and the reduction of reality to data

Dear Nettimers,

a debate about a computational phrenology paper "Tracking historical
changes in trustworthiness using machine learning analyses of facial
cues in paintings" (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-020-18566-7) is now
ongoing on twitter

I would be interested to hear how you comment on it from a perspective
of so called AI art, mainly I'm referring to GAN experiments, and
similar stuff like pattern detection based works.

best,

Francis
