‘…because of the performance aspect of many installations, conservators
working with this medium will need to look beyond the material and consider
that the “heart” of a work might lie primarily in its less-tangible
qualities. Preserving for the future something that is above all an
experience might require conservators to take a more fluid view of what may
or may not be changed about a work, challenging conventional notions of
accuracy and authenticity.’

Steeds meer musea voor moderne kunst verzamelen installaties waarin
verschillende media worden gebruikt. De problematiek bij deze verwervingen
is aanzienlijk. Welke aspecten spelen een rol bij de conservering en
herinstallatie van multimedia installaties? Wat zijn de criteria voor
conservering en herinstallatie? Is er behoefte aan meer technische kennis om
deze installaties ook in de toekomst te kunnen presenteren? Hoe registreer
en documenteer je installaties? Zonder oplossingen zal een aantal van deze
werken op termijn als verloren moeten worden beschouwd.

Op 10 oktober a.s. organiseren het ICN en het Nederlands Instituut voor
Mediakunst Montevideo/TBA (NIM) daarom een internationaal lezingenprogramma
over behoud en herinstallatie van multimedia installaties. De lezingen
worden georganiseerd om kennis op het gebied van installaties uit te
wisselen.
