Ieder jaar organiseert stichting Gaudeamus de Gaudeamus Muziekweek, 
waarin het werk van jonge, internationale componisten wordt uitgevoerd. 
In het kader van deze week, en in samenwerking met STEIM, vindt dit 
jaar ook een festival plaats van één nacht: The Night of the 
Unexpected. Hierin staat de verscheidenheid en dynamiek centraal die de 
huidige ontwikkeling van de nieuwe muziek kenmerkt.

The Night of the Unexpected is een avond vol muzikale verassingen die 
dwars door stijlen en genres voert, van experimentele techno tot 
gecomponeerde muziek. Onder andere Mouse on Mars, Scanner, Eboman, 
David Toop, Carsten Nicolai, Staalplaat Soundsystem en Charlemagne 
Palestine zullen optreden. Van Yannis Kyriakides is een stuk voor 
glasplaten, stroboscopen en elektronica te horen en Merlijn Twaalfhoven 
zet een koor walkmans op het hoofd. In totaal treden er veertien acts 
aan. Het programma is een strak geënsceneerde opeenvolging van korte, 
puntige performances. De optredens staan haaks op elkaar, zonder pauze. 
The Night of the Unexpected wil verwachtingspatronen doorbreken. Op 
speelse wijze worden bestaande gewoontes ter discussie gesteld. Een 
ensemble staat midden in de zaal, publiek wordt toegezongen vanaf het 
balkon. Bezoekers worden omgeven door concerten, performances, 
videoschermen en geluidsinstallaties.

Slagwerkgroep Den Haag - “Strobos” van Yannis Kyriakides
Compositie met glasplaten, electronica en stroboscopen
Eboman – “interface band”
Real-time geluids- en beeldcompositie met o.a. skateboards van Eboman’s 
Interface Band, waarvan dit de eerste publieke performance is
Charlemagne Palestine en Reinier van Houdt - “Strummette for 2 pianos”
Fysieke performance voor 2 piano’s van één van de grondleggers van de 
minimal music
Scanner
Twee performances van Engelse geluidskunstenaar, waaronder een speciale 
set met de stem en beelden van AndyWarhol
Merlijn Twaalfhoven, het Nederlands Vocaal Laboratorium en het Cluster 
Kamerkoor o.l.v. Romain Bischoff
Drie vocale contrapunten gecomponeerd door Merlijn Twaalfhoven, o.a. 
bekend van la Nuit n’est pas un chocolat. Het Cluster Kamerkoor zingt 
met walkmans op het hoofd.

Performance voor 2 draaitafels en 60 stofzuigers
Collision Palace - “Coming Together” van Frederic Rzewski
Sociaal geëngageerd stuk ooit uitgevoerd door Hoketus
Alva Noto / Carsten Nicolai
Baanbrekende, minimale techno met clicks & cuts
Reinier van Houdt – “Grand Piano” van Alvin Curran
Krachtsexplosie voor piano
Marko Ciciliani – No input mixer
Solo voor mengtafel zonder externe geluidsbronnen

The Night of the Unexpected is samengesteld door gastprogrammeur Roland 
Spekle. Hij is o.a. programmeur voor STEIM en Huis a/d Werf. The Night 
of the Unexpected maakt deel uit van de Internationale Gaudeamus 
Muziekweek en wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met STEIM.

Every year, the Gaudeamus Foundation organises the Gaudeamus Music 
Week, in which the work of young international artists is presented. In 
the framework of this week, and in collaboration with STEIM, a festival 
of one night is presented: the Night of the Unexpected. This festival 
focuses on the diversity and dynamics of new music.

The Night of the Unexpected is an evening with musical surprises and a 
programme that crosses styles and genres, from experimental techno to 
composed music. Mouse on Mars, Scanner, Eboman, David Toop & Max 
Eastley, Carsten Nicolai, Staalplaat Soundsystem and Charlemagne 
Palestine are amongst the 14 acts that will be performing. A piece by 
Yannis Kyriakides for glass plates, electronics and stroboscopes will 
be performed. And up-and-coming Dutch composer Merlijn Twaalfhoven will 
have a choir singing along with the score on their walkmans. The 
programme consists of short performances, following each other without 
intermissions. The Night of the Unexpected will playfully counteract 
patterns of expectations. An ensemble is in the middle of the venue, 
and the audience will be sung to from the balcony. Visitors will be 
surrounded by concerts, performances, video screens, and sound 
installations.

One of the innovators of experimental techno
Slagwerkgroep Den Haag - “Strobos” van Yannis Kyriakides
Composition for glass plates, electronica and stroboscopes
Eboman - “interface band”
Real-time sound and visual composition for game controllers, like 
joysticks, a wheel and skateboards. The “interface band” is the first 
public performance of a group piece with controllers to manipulate 
sound and images on three screens in real time.
Charlemagne Palestine and Reinier van Houdt - “Strummette for 2 pianos”
Physical piano piece for two pianos by one of the founders of minimal 
music.
Scanner
Two performances by Scanner, one of which is a 20-minute set based on 
the work of Andy Warhol.
Merlijn Twaalfhoven, the Dutch Vocal Laboratory and the Cluster Choir 
(artistic direction: Romain Bischoff)
Three vocal counterpoints composed by Merlijn Twaalfhoven, who strongly 
believes in mixing professional and amateur performers, and positioning 
them in different, unexpected places throughout the venue or amongst  
the audience. The Cluster Choir will be wearing walkmans and listening 
to their score while performing a piece by Twaalfhoven.
Staalplaat Soundsystem
Performance for two turntables and 60 vacuum cleaners.
Collision Palace - “Coming Together” by Frederic Rzewski
Socially engaged piece by Rzewski, in which the lyrics are a letter 
written by an inmate in Attica. Collision Palace is a group of young 
improvisers and performers.
Alva Noto / Carsten Nicolai
Groundbreaking, minimal techno with clicks & cuts.
Reinier van Houdt – “Grand Piano” by Alvin Curran
A highly physical piano piece that starts off the evening, written by 
Alvin Curran.
Marko Ciciliani – No input mixer
Solo for mixing desk without any external inputs.
Michel Waisvisz  - Sonic Security Check
Lightly explosive audio scan of the entering audience. Michel Waisvisz 
plays with “the hands,” a gestural controller with which he can record 
and manipulate sound in real time.
Anne-James Chaton
The performances of this French sound poet, who played as an opening 
act for the Ex, are said to be claustrophobic.
David Toop & Max Eastley
With “new and rediscovered musical instruments,” this illustrious 
English duo creates an ocean of sound.

The Night of the Unexpected is programmed by guest curator Roland 
Spekle, who works for STEIM, Huis a/d Werf and elsewhere. The Night of 
the Unexpected is part of the Gaudeamus Music Week, and is presented in 
collaboration with STEIM.
