STEIM presenteert op donderdag 15 april om 20.30 u in het kader van de 
No Backup concertserie een avond met Jon Rose en Adam Linson.

Jon Rose geldt als een pionier op het gebied van de hedendaagse 
vioolmuziek.
Al op zevenjarige leeftijd begon Rose met het spelen van viool en liet 
hij op zijn vijftiende de formele muzikale scholing achter zich. In de 
70-er jaren ontwikkelde Rose zich tot de centrale figuur in de 
Australische Free Jazz, maar niet nadat hij zich vele stijlen had eigen 
gemaakt, variërend van sitarmuziek tot country & western, en van 
gecomponeerde muziek tot commercieel studiowerk. In 1986 verhuisde Rose 
naar Berlijn om zich toe te leggen op zijn project ‘The Relative 
Violin’. Het stond Rose voor ogen een totale kunstvorm rond de viool te 
maken, waarbij vernieuwing in instrumentontwerp, nieuwe instrumentale 
technieken, het gebruik van zowel analoge als interactieve elektronica 
en het creëren van speciale performances de uitgangspunten waren. Zijn 
doel was een nieuwe, persoonlijke geschiedenis van de viool te 
scheppen. Rose is een veelgevraagd speler die over de hele wereld 
performances geeft. Zo speelde hij o.a. met Derek Bailey, Otomo 
Yoshihide, Fred Frith, Phil Minton, Evan Parker, Christian Marclay en 
David Moss. Ook is hij de programmeur van zijn ‘String ‘em Up’ en 
andere festivals.

Adam Linson speelt contrabas en richt zich daarbij zowel op 
gecomponeerde muziek als op improvisaties, o.a. met George Lewis. 
Linson, geboren in de Verenigde Staten maar nu woonachtig in Berlijn, 
legt zich tegenwoordig meer toe op de relatie tussen akoestische muziek 
en elektronica. Hij heeft software geschreven met audiovisuele 
mogelijkheden, waarbij live musici in real-time kunnen interacteren.

Jon Rose en Adam Linson zullen gezamenlijk een avondvullend concert 
geven bij STEIM. Dit kan bestaan uit solostukken en een gezamenlijke 
set, waarbij vanzelfsprekend naast instrumentale virtuositeit de rol 
van akoestische instrumenten in relatie tot elektronica centraal zal 
staan.

Jon Rose can be considered as a pioneer in contemporary violin music. 
Already when he was seven years of age he started to play the violin 
and left formal music education behind him at his fifteenth. In the 
seventies Rose became a central figure in Australian Free Jazz, having 
gone through various styles and experiences before, ranging from sitar 
music to country & western, and from composed music to commercial 
studio work. In 1986 Rose moved to Berlin to concentrate on his project 
‘The Relative Violin’. Rose wanted to develop a total artform around 
the violin, in which innovation in instrument design, new instrumental 
techniques, the use of analogue and interactive electronics and the 
creation of specific performance situations were among the most 
important key elements. His goal was to create a new, personal revised 
history of the violin. Rose has performed numerous times around the 
world and has played with such great players as Derek Bailey, Otomo 
Yoshihide, Fred Frith, Phil Minton, Evan Parker, Christian Marclay en 
David Moss.
He has also curated many festivals such as his ‘String ‘em Up’ 
festival. He wrote books and recorded CD’s.

Adam Linson is a double bass player who has focussed both on composed 
music as well as improvised music, a.o. with George Lewis. Linson, born 
in the United States but living in Berlin at the moment, has recently 
done a lot of research on the relation between acoustic instruments and 
electronics. For the past year, he has been developing computer music 
software with audio-visual applications for real-time interactive use 
with live musicians.

Jon Rose and Adam Linson will be presenting a full concert programme at 
STEIM. This may consist of solo pieces as well as a duo set, in which, 
of course aside of instrumental virtuosity, the focus will be on the 
relation between acoustic instruments and electronics.
