[Nettime-nl] [ STEIM ] Concert Announcement Thursday May 27th

STEIM presenteert in het kader van de No Backup concertserie op 
donderdag 27 mei een avond met Nic Collins en Axel Dörner .

De concertavond zal bestaan uit twee sets waarin een aantal solostukken 
door beide virtuoze musici worden gespeeld en ook een aantal 
gezamenlijke stukken.

Nic Collins (USA) heeft gestudeerd bij Alvin Lucier en David Tudor. In 
de bloeiende improvisatiescene in de 80-er jaren in New York was 
Collins samen met bv. John Zorn, Elliott Sharp, Christian Marclay en 
Zeena Parkins een graag geziene gast. Met zijn elektronisch 
gemodificeerde trombone kon hij vrijelijk samples oproepen. In de 90-er 
jaren vertoefde Collins als artistiek gastdirekteur van STEIM in 
Amsterdam en later in Berlijn. Deze week is Collins bij STEIM om een 
cursus hardware hacking te geven. Eén van de stukken die Collins ten 
gehore zal brengen is “The Talking Cure”. Dit stuk maakt gebruik van 
tekst, maar niet van vooraf opgenomen geluid. Collins zegt hierover: 
“In “The Talking Cure” a computer follows the inflection and phoneme 
content of the voice and generates a piano accompaniment that, to my 
ear, sounds like Charles Ives working a cocktail lounge.  The computer 
also records certain specific speech sounds, which can be played back 
later to overlay a vaguely instrumental solo line, inspired by the 
extraordinary trumpet style of Axel Dörner.  Sometimes I begin the 
performance with a family letter or a newspaper article in hand as a 
conceptual point of departure; other times I prepare nothing.  I hold 
forth for 15-25 minutes and the computer does the rest, making music 
off my cuff.
The title derives from an early euphemism for Freudian psychoanalysis. 
Freud advised the patient to “utter without obstruction the thoughts 
and ideas rising to his mind,” which is pretty much the advice I follow 
on stage.”

Axel Dörner is een virtuoze trompettist uit Berlijn, die zowel 
gecomponeerde muziekwerken als jazz en improvisatiemuziek speelt. Over 
Dörner werd geschreven: "Axel Dörner has a panoramic perspective on the 
trumpet. In his hands, it can sing with all the glorious history jazz 
has invested in it. Or, alternately, it can be reduced to an 
improvisor´s "object trouvé" – twisted clumb of clumber´s refuse, metal 
tube of given length with several holes and plugs given over to 
variances in hissing and whistling." Dörner wordt beschouwd als één van 
de opkomende, toonaangevende improvisatiemusici. Naast door hem 
ontwikkelde nieuwe speeltechnieken, maakt hij ook vaak gebruik van 
elektronica in relatie tot zijn trompetspel. Axel Dörner speelde o.a. 
met Tom Cora, Mats Gustafsson en Ken Vandermark.
