Op 25 oktober presenteert STEIM een avond met intrigerende, 
elektronische geluidswerelden in Frascati.
Twee optredens zullen plaatsvinden: Merzbow & Kim Cascone en Aki Onda.

Merzbow & Kim Cascone
Merzbow is misschien wel de meeste bekende en invloedrijke noise-groep. 
De uit Japan afkomstige Masami Akita, die achter de naam Merzbow schuil 
gaat, maakt al sinds de 80-er jaren harde, confronterende 
geluidsstukken.
De muziek van Merzbow klinkt als een deconstructie van academische 
muziek, punk, rock en industriële muziek en kan wel gezien worden als 
de missing link met death metal en grindcore. Terwijl de intensiteit 
immer hoog
blijft, ontwikkelen zich in zijn stukken steeds nieuwe klanken en 
texturen. Tegenwoordig creëert Merzbow meer atmosferische, 
gestructureerde stukken.
Kim Cascone heeft ook een lange geschiedenis in de elektronische 
muziek. Zo werkte hij als assistent music editor aan Twin Peaks en Wild 
at Heart van David Lynch en sloot hij zich later als sound designer aan 
bij
Headspace van Thomas Dolby en werkte daarna aan het geluid voor games. 
Ook richtte hij Silent Records op dat zich ontwikkelde tot het meest 
belangrijke label voor elektronische muziek in die periode.
Recentelijk geeft hij workshops, lezingen en modereert hij de 
microsound list. Maar bovenal is Cascone een componist en maakte hij 
tot nu toe meer dan 15 CD’s.
Zijn voorliefde voor gestileerde, minimale klanken, gepresenteerd op 
subtiele, intrigerende wijze levert een interessant contrast op voor 
zijn samenwerking met Merzbow.

Aki Onda
Aki Onda behoort tot de jongere performers van elektronische muziek die 
Luc Ferrari aanduidde als “les nouveaux concrets”.
Zij blijven trouw aan de uitgangspunten van Pierre Schaeffer, waarbij 
‘gevonden geluid’ in een nieuwe context wordt geplaatst.
Zijn instrumentarium is een mengtafel en een aantal walkman’s die hij 
gebruikt als Gameboys, terwijl hij achter een tafel staat met 
tientallen cassettes met geluiden vergaard tijdens zijn vele reizen.
Met de precisie van een DJ hanteert Onda de fast forward of rewind knop 
om geluiden te lokaliseren en de compositie een nieuwe wending te 
geven. De ruis van de audio cassettes is een onvervreemdbaar element in 
zijn muziek
van waaruit een warme, mysterieuze mix van vogelgeluiden, gesprekken en 
verkeer opkomt als een fantoom.

On October 25th, STEIM presents in Theatre Frascati an evening with 
intruiging electronic sonic worlds.
Two performances will take place: Merzbow & Kim Cascone and Aki Onda

Merzbow & Kim Cascone
Merzbow is possibly the best known and most influential noise group in 
the world. The Japanse Masami Akita, who hides behind the monniker of 
Merzbow, produces loud, confrontational sound pieces since the 80-ies.
The music of Merzbow sounds like a deconstruction of academic music, 
punk, rock and industrial music and can be seen as the missing link 
with death metal and grindcore.
While the intensity remains high, his music always produces new sounds 
and textures. These days Merzbow creates more atmospheric, structured 
pieces.
Kim Cascone also has a long history in electronic music. He worked as 
an assistant editor on Twin Peaks and Wild at Heart of David Lynch, 
worked as a sound designer for the Headspace studio of Thomas Dolby and 
created sounds for games.
He’s the founder of Silent Records, which developed into one of the 
most important electronic music labels in its time.
Nowadays Cascone gives workshops, lectures and moderates the Microsound 
list. But most of all Cascone is a composer with 15 CD’s on his name.
His love for well defined, minimal sounds, presented in a subtle and 
intruiging fashion, may give an interesting contrast while 
collaborating with Merzbow.

Aki Onda
Aki Onda belongs to the younger generation of performers of electronic 
music that Luc Ferrari called “les nouveaux concrets”, therewith 
referring to a new generation of Musique Concrete.
They remain true to the basic ideas of Pierre Schaeffer, in which 
‘found sound’ is being placed in a new context. His intruments are a 
mixing desk and a number of walkmans which he uses
as Gameboys, while Onda is seated behind a table with dozens of 
cassettes on which he has recorded environmental sounds during his many 
trips.
With the precision of a DJ, Onda uses the fast forward and rewind 
button to localise sounds and send the composition into a different 
direction.
The hiss of the audio cassettes is an indistinguishable element in his 
music; a warm, mysterious blur out of fragments of birdsong, 
conversation and traffic emerge like ghosts.
