Instead of Lebbeus Woods: The Evening of Sponge

For health reasons, American architect Lebbeus Woods had to cancel his
evening on Thursday 11 November. Instead of an evening on social change
and architecture, DEAF04 presents The Evening of Sponge.

Sponge (Sha Xin Wei, Chris Salter, Joel Ryan, Harry Smoak, Yoichiro
Serita, Delphine Nain, Maria Cordell) will offer a public round table
discussion and presentation of its current experiment Membrane, now
exhibited at DEAF04.

Central question of The Evening of Sponge is: Why should our personal and
urban spaces be more mediated or interactive? What makes some responsive
systems or environments compelling and others the kiss of death?

The Evening of Sponge: Thursday 11 November, 20:00-22:00 hrs @ Van Nelle
Ontwerpfabriek

Utopia Travel roaming the streets of Rotterdam

This week, from the opening night to Saturday 13 November, the Austrian
artists Emanuel Danesch and David Rych will roam the streets of Rotterdam
with a special Utopia Travel vehicle.

This vehicle will be parked at strategic locations in Rotterdam, such as
the DEAF04 festival location and the Witte de Withstraat, where passers-by
can browse through the Utopia Travel video archive.

Utopia Travel: Tuesday 9 – Saturday 13 November @ various locations in
Rotterdam. Check the schedule on the website http://www.deaf04.nl

Tactical Urban Map Hack workshop

Traditionally, the mapping of territory has been an exclusive, closed
activity, as a means of legitimizing and enforcing the hierarchy of
governments and bureaucracies. The three-day workshop Tactical Urban Map
Hack (11-13 November) in the open space of Rotterdam involves the public
in artistic and activist web cartography projects, participating in the
creation of open urban mapping systems.

Data from the city, delivered by the workshop participants will be
consolidated in an online digital map that will be displayed live during
DEAF04 with the Cartographic Command Center (CCC). If you want to
participate in the Tactical Urban Map Hack workshop, come to the workshop
introduction at the Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek

Tactical Urban Map Hack: Thursday 11 November, 15:00-17:00 hrs @ Van Nelle
Ontwerpfabriek

DEAF04 presents online radio art, streams & coverage

In collaboration with Radioswap, Radio Tilos and RadioWORM, DEAF04
introduces the live streaming segment DEAF RADIO. On Wednesday 10,
Thursday 11, Friday 12 and Saturday 13 November, DEAF RADIO gives daily
reports on the festival with interventions and radio concerts. Zoë Irvine
will bring Magnetic Migration Music to Rotterdam, soundscapes based on
pieces of stray audio tapes found all over the world.

In the Live Streams section of the website, most of the events on DEAF04
will be streamed, which is a unique feature of our festival. The Coverage
section offers various types of coverage of the festival: critical
analysis, in-depth reviews, video and text reports, photographic essays
and archived video streams. External contributions are welcomed; please
send your proposals to archive@v2.nl
