[Nettime-nl] Live @ MS Stubnitz: Rechenzentrum, Goem, Zebra & Slo Fi

MS Stubnitz presents live:

Rechenzentrum, Goem, Zebra & Slo Fi

Rechenzentrum

Four years after their critically acclaimed DVD Director?s Cut, Rechenzentrum ? Marc Weiser (sound) and Lillevan (video) ? now present a completely renewed acoustic and visual aesthetic, framed in a stronger than ever conceptual approach.

The electronic surface of the tracks has developed into a predominantly electro-acoustic world of sound, receiving its impulse from Marc Weiser?s long-standing membership of the Zeitkratzer ensemble for contemporary music. As well as the purely instrumental tracks, there are now vocal tracks, sung by Weiser, which various critics have been rated as being somewhere between Marvin Gaye and David Sylvian, and which expand the Rechenzentrum universe, giving it a timeless pop facet. Consequently, for the release concert Rechenzentrum have invited Zeitkratzer members Reinhold Friedl (piano), Maurice de Martin (percussion), and Franz Hautzinger (trumpet) for a previously unheard live experience. For "Silence", video artist Lillevan has developed the visual vocabulary of his delicate video-tracks from his previously preferred collage-style towards handcrafted black and white drawings, manipulated and transformed with outstanding finesse to form a symbiotic unity with the music.

Three months after performing at the Volksbühne together with Mike Patton, Paris- and Vienna-based sound artist Fennez returns with a collaboration project no less extraordinary. Together with the US-American filmmaker and video artist Charles Atlas ? in the spotlight through his longstanding collaborations with performers and dancers like Michael Clark, Leigh Bowery, Merce Cunningham, and, most recently, an installation with Anthony and the Johnson at the Whitney Museum in New York ? he has created and audio-visual performance, that bridges contemporary music and visual arts. While Fennesz layers complex and mysteriously iridescent sound textures with guitar and laptop, Atlas with his computers recombines courageously improvised video-sequences from film snippets and samples of documentary features, musicals, B-movies and war propaganda.

Goem

In the hectic year 2001, Goem played around the world: at Mutek, in Japan, England, Austria, the UK, Spain, France and in between on various locations they worked on their 'Abri' CD, which was released later in 2001. Also they organised the 'Gast' CD, with various people (Matmos, Taylor Deupree, Richard Chartier etc) at the controls of Goem equipment. For the constant changing minds of Goem all of this activity was also the end of an area. It was thought that the working methods of Goem had been well-explored and nothing needed to be added. In the 2002 they produced a three minute sound piece for an installation and after that: silence. With Peter Duimelinks and Roel Meelkop in Rotterdam and Frans de Waard in Nijmegen it was also not very easy to meet up, also due to their personal busy schedules.
Early 2004 Frans de Waard got access to the sound studio connected to local arts initiative Extrapool, notorius for the recordings of the Brombron project. In the studio a wide array of vintage synthesizers can be found and new Goem recordings were made. Roel Meelkop and Frans de Waard recorded a remix of Esplendor Geometrico and Peter Duimelinks and Frans de Waard a soon appear 10" record for Auf Abwegen. With all machinary at hand, Frans de Waard also recorded eleven new tracks as Goem. Expanding on the known concept, he now incorporated breaks in the music, and some tracks do not rely on samples but on pure synthesizer tones; others were solely recorded using software. This record breaks away from the old Goem and walks new paths. Goem as a trio will continue to exist and record new
material in the future. Since 2005 Frans de Waard has played solo goem concerts as Goem FDW in Athens, Tokyo, Kyoto, Yamaguchi, Washington, Nijmegen, Den Haag and Utrecht

Zèbra

Electronic music with poppy screen, Zuid-Nederlandse the formatie Zèbra have carefully chosen its name. And it is reflected there well almost concerning the name, this way it has been well reflected also concerning music. To Beatles and New order reminding meltpop, home or humoristic texts, fuming pluginsectie, it are some ingredienten which typify music. With thanks to the firm accompaniment of the hard disk and the presence of the former chamber servant of king Leif are oer-Hollandse chew tobacco the meltpop accessibly and generally best, however, well. The strength of Zèbra is that the link makes meltpop for a broad public, public that in movement wants be brought. And oh yes, they have a 7" on Olé Records and are working on their first CD 'The Black & White Album'

Slo Fi

If the proposition had been made that audio/visual artist Roel Meelkop of all people (he of "strict" musique parallelists Goem, Kapotte Muzeik, and THU20, outcasts all) had the wherewithall to straighten up the rigid techno aristocracy in a couple fell swoops, those in attendance would have indulged in the time-honored tradition known as knee-slapping. The joke's on them-as Slo-Fi, Meelkop hasn't reinvented the wheel as such, but he's sure as hell greased the treads and tightened the spokes. Slo-Fi's first long-player, released on Staalplaat CDR sublabel Microwave, was a knotty filigree of squiggles, spangles and beads, the type of dry-as-Nevada, sparse minibeat tapestries that "parent" band Goem built its rep on. 'S Latest Hits (hee hee) lets some welcome humidity into the grooves, but don't underestimate Meelkop's tenacity: all of the untitled tracks not only look for the perfect beat, they find it in spades. Track four's galloping synths, viral bassline and wet-blanket of
effects recall nothing less than the illegitimate offspring of mid-90s Cabaret Voltaire (notably International Language and The Conversation), its relentless, seesawing rhythm making for an ideal copy of dark House. As the corroded ping-pong bell tones underpinning track six's post acid crash envelope your listening environment, suddenly it's déjà vu all over again, the ghost of 1991 peeking out through 07's covers, but Meelkop tweaks the formula so well the sensation feels utterly contemporary. Slo-Fi's maxim bequeaths that everything old is, apparently, new again-if he keeps releasing stuff this good, Meelkop could conceivably quit his day job. Henke, Kirk and co. better watch their backs.
