NomadicMILK: presentatie van de onderzoeksfase
Eind 2006 zijn kunstenaar Esther Polak en mobile technology  
researcher Michiel De Lange met dit project van start gegaan. Een  
project dat de mobiliteitspatronen van twee verschillende  
zuiveleconomieën in Nigeria wil laten zien: die van de PEAK Milk  
distributie en die van nomadisch Fulani herders.
Eind 2006 heeft het team een researchtrip naar Nigeria gemaakt om  
voorbereidend onderzoek te doen. Toekomstige deelnemers aan het  
project zijn tijdens deze reis bezocht. De presentatie geeft hiervan  
een impressie.
Een belangrijk onderdeel van het project is de ontwikkeling van een  
speciale robot die in staat zal zijn om de met GPS opgenomen routes  
op de grond uit te tekenen. Met deze robot zal het team aansprekende  
en tastbare GPS-tekeningen kunnen maken die gemakkelijk kunnen worden  
besproken met de deelnemers op locatie, en later getoond in  
exposities. De interactie tussen de deelnemers en de robottekening is  
een van de centrale thema’s van het project. Gedurende de reis was de  
robot nog niet functioneel, het team heeft onderweg tekeningen  
gemaakt met de hand. Op dit moment is van deze robot een prototype  
gereed en tot ons genoegen kunnen wij die nu presenteren. Het op de  
tentoonstelling gepresenteerde zandspoor toont één dag van koeien  
verweiden dat het team met GPS heeft opgenomen in samenwerking met de  
bezochte Fulani familie in Nigeria.
Deze presentatie was eerder te zien in Graz, Oostenrijk.

At the end of 2006 artist Esther Polak and mobile technology  
researcher Michiel De Lange started working on NomadicMILK. The  
project plans to show the mobility patters of two kinds of dairy  
economies in Nigeria: the distribution of PEAK-milk dairy products  
and the mobility of Nomadic Fulani herders.

End 2006 the team made a research trip to Nigeria to visit possible  
future participants of the project. The presentation in Leiden will  
give an impression.
One important aspect of the project is to develop a robot that is  
able to plot the GPS routes on the ground. In this way the team will  
be able to create tangible and attractive GPS-drawings and discuss  
the routes with the participants themselves on location and to show  
them later in exhibition situation. The interaction between robot and  
participants is one of the central themes of the project. During the  
trip this robot was not developed yet and the team made map-drawings  
by hand. We are proud to present the robot in this exhibition as a  
prototype and we will use it to make a drawing of one of the recorded  
routes: One day of cow herding, recorded in collaboration with the  
Fulani family during the trip.
