I'M THE ENEMY YOU WILL KIIL, MY FRIEND

Niet eerder vertoonde videobeelden uit de Balkan als aanleiding voor een
gesprek over opinievorming en verantwoordelijkheid.

Donderdag 3 juni a.s. presenteert het International Documentary
Filmfestival Amsterdam i.s.m. de Balie een discussie-avond over oorlog,
media en verantwoordelijkheid.

Elke dag zijn er op televisie op alle kanalen berichten te zien over de
huidige strijd op de Balkan: vluchtelingenstromen uit Kosovo,
bombardementen op Servische doelen, politici die een diplomatieke oplossing
zoeken, persconferenties van NATO woordvoerders.
Uit al het beschikbare materiaal hierover maken programmamakers keuzes: wat
laat ik zien en wat niet, welk verhaal vertel ik.
Naast het materiaal waarover journalisten en programmamakers beschikken, is
er ook materiaal dat niet uit hun eigen netwerk voortkomt: home video's en
illegaal gefilmd materiaal bijvoorbeeld. Dit materiaal wordt grotendeels
niet vertoond, hoewel het een betekenisvolle aanvulling zou kunnen zijn op
de gebruikelijke beelden.

Dit materiaal zal donderdag wel te zien zijn: beelden uit verschillende
delen van Joegoslavië, gefilmd door mensen die er vandaan komen, op voor
westerse journalisten ontoegankelijke plekken. Beelden over de
vernietiging, de bevolking ter plekke, het overleven. Persoonlijke
verhalen, niet in dienst van een nieuwszender of de jacht naar kijkcijfers,
niet in dienst van de propagandamachines aan beide zijden. Verslagen van de
derde partij in het conflict: de burgers.

Naar aanleiding van het videomateriaal zullen journalisten en politici
praten over keuzes, manipulatie, opinievorming en verantwoordelijkheid in
de berichtgeving over oorlog op de Balkan.

Hebben mensen in Nederland het gevoel dat hun land in oorlog is? Hoe ver
gaat hun betrokkenheid en verantwoordelijkheidsgevoel? Zien de mensen in
Belgrado Nederlanders als hun vijand, als de mensen door wie ze
gebombardeerd worden? In hoeverre worden deze gevoelens bepaald door de
berichtgeving op televisie, radio en in kranten? En wat is derhalve de
verantwoordelijkheid van de makers?

I'M THE ENEMY YOU WILL KIIL, MY FRIEND

Previously unshown video footage from the Balkans, as ground for a
discussion about public opinion and responsibility.

This Thursday 3 June the International Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam,
in collaboration with de Balie, will organise a discussion about war, the
media and responsibility.

Every day, all television channels report on the current conflict on the
Balkans: streams of refugees from Kosovo, bombings of Serbian targets,
politicians looking for a diplomatic solution, press conferences by NATO
spokesmen.
Editors have to choose from all the available material on the subject: what
will I show and will I not show, which story am I going to tell?
Apart from the footage that journalists and editors have, there is also
material that is not produced by their own networks: home videos and
illegally shot footage, for example. For the greater part, this material is
not shown, although it could be a significant supplement to the customary
images.

This footage will be shown this Thursday: images from different parts of
Yugoslavia, filmed by people who live there, in places that are
inaccessible to Western journalists. Images of the destruction, the people
in their villages, their struggle for survival. Personal stories, not for
the purpose of a news programme or the pursuit of high viewer ratings, not
serving the propaganda machines on both sides. Accounts by the third party
in the conflict: the civilians.

With reference to the video footage, journalists and politicians will talk
about choices, manipulation, public opinion and responsibility in the
reports on the Balkan conflict.

Do people in the Netherlands feel that their country is at war? How far
does their involvement and sense of responsibility stretch? Do people in
Belgrade see the Dutch as their enemies, as the people who are bombing
them? To what extent are these feelings induced by the reports on
television, radio and in newspapers? And what then is the responsibility of
the makers?
