âCodurile sociale moderne permit grupului imediat inferior sÄ imite gusturile Èi preferinÈele celui de deasupra. Conform acestui model, grupurile ce au un statut Ãnalt sunt forÈate sÄ adopte stiluri noi pentru a-Èi menÈine superioritatea/diferenÈa, gusturile filtrÃndu-se Ãn jos pe scara socialÄ. Asta se ÃntÃmplÄ periodic, deci un proces ciclic este creat, generÃnd mutaÈiile aparent misterioase pe care le numim modÄ.

AfluenÈa financiarÄ a clasei mijlocii, Èi consumul masiv sunt vÄzute ca mijloace de excludere â neidentificarea cu alte grupuri; afluenÈa clasei mijlocii este vÄzutÄ ca un mijloc de imitare â identificarea cu alte grupuri. Se presupune cÄ producÈia de masÄ ameninÈÄ sÄ erodeze, sÄ absoarbÄ sau sÄ facÄ neimportante diferenÈele de clasÄ, fÄcÃnd prezervarea âdistincÈieiâ prerogativul privilegiaÈilor Èi al grupurilor de elitÄ. Rezultatul este cÄ cei din grupurile subordonate, mai degrabÄ decÃt sÄ aibÄ propriile metode de excludere, rÃvnesc cÄtre cei din grupurile de statut mai Ãnalt.

O istorie a nostalgiei nu este ÃncÄ scrisÄ, dar aceastÄ relaÈie la timpul trecut a conÈtiinÈei cu comportamentul explicÄ o diferenÈÄ crucialÄ. Trecutul este evocat nostalgic ca un timp al inocenÈei Èi al trÄirilor modeste. Ãn trecut, cineva era realmente Ãn viaÈÄ, numai dacÄ cineva a fost capabil a da sens trecutului, astfel confuzia prezentului ar putea fi facilitatÄ. Acesta este adevÄrul prin retrospecÈie. âModern social codes allow the immediately inferior group to imitate the gestures and preferences of their superiors. According to this pattern, groups which have a higher status are forced to adopt new styles in order to maintain their superiority/difference, tastes being filtered downwards along social status. This happens periodically, so a circular process is created, generating the apparently strange mutations which we call fashion.

The financial affluence of the middle-class and the large consumption are viewed as means for exclusion â not being able to identify with other groups; the affluence of the middle-class is seen as means for imitation â being able to identify with other groups. It is said that mass production is threatened by erosion, by absorption or by making the differences between classes seem unimportant, by making the preservation of âdistinctionâ prerogative for the privileged and the elite. The result is that those from the subordinate groups, rather than having their own methods of exclusion, they crave towards those belonging to a higher group.

A history of nostalgia hasnât been yet established, but the conscience in the past tense in relation with the behaviour explains a crucial difference. The past is conjured up nostalgically, as a time of innocence and of modest experiences. In the past, somebody was really alive and if somebody was able to make sense of the past, the confusion of the present could be eased. This is the truth in retrospect.
