Liza Johnson's Fernweh/The Opposite of Homesick cleverly juxtaposes
 two intersecting story lines that provide a mordant critique of
 post-Communist Germany. Margaret, a film cleaner at an archive, who
 stoically survived the indignities of the former German Democratic
 Republic, views the promise of prosperity in a newly united Germany
 with a certain wariness. When an earnest young man who romanticizes
 America as a land of unlimited prosperity turns up with his older and
 more cynical American lover, a Fassbinderian power struggle
 augments the more elegiac tone set by Margaret's reminiscences. Shot
 and edited with marked assurance, Johnson's jaundiced assessment of
 contemporary German mores is both witty and utterly unsentimental.
