 Represent'n
At the turn of the new century, a new generation of African-American
artists is at work on the cutting edge of today's art. Representing a
new spirit and widening the perimeters of American culture are artists
like Sanford Biggers, Chakaia Booker, Michael Ray Charles, Ellen
Gallagher, Lyle Ashton Harris, Glenn Ligon, Kerry James Marshall, Paul
Miller (aka DJ Spooky, that Subliminal Kid), Kara Walker, and others.
Bold, highly individualistic, and very gifted, these artists also
exhibit a clear understanding of the intricacies of the contemporary art
machine, which enables them to negotiate the mainstream with admirable
finesse. They are as intent on visibility as they are on defining their
own perspectives beyond the dictates of history, precedents, or
community. Our panel of artists and critics explores how this
distinguished group is reconfiguring our assumptions about
 African-American art.
