In June/July 1998, V2_Organisation Rotterdam is organising a week-long
workshop with 11 artists from seven East and West European countries. The
workshop will be held in the new V2_Lab, International Laboratory for the
Unstable Media. During one week, the artists will work together under the
theme of 'Virtual Revolutions: The Doppelgaenger Revolution', exploring the
aesthetics and the politics of online identities.

VIRTUAL REVOLUTIONS

Virtual Revolutions is a series of four media art workshops which take
place at venues across Europe in Sofia/Bulgaria (SCA), Rotterdam/The
Netherlands (V2_), Tornio/Finland (Polar Circuit 2) and Manchester/UK
(Revolting) in spring and summer 1998.

Virtual Revolutions builds diverse and international teams of artists to
work together and enjoy each other's experiences. Different artists will be
participating in each of the workshops, yet, they will be able to
communicate and build on each others work through a collaborative working
environment on the Internet. The workshops are another step in getting
beyond the former east/west divide of Europe and test the creative
potential of translocality and virtuality.

The Virtual Revolutions series leads to the production of a CD-ROM and a
WWW-site that will document the participants projects in a shared
environment. This documentation will be presented during the ISEA98
conference in Liverpool and Manchester in September 1998.

Workshop theme

The title of the workshop series, Virtual Revolutions, is derived from the
theme of ISEA98, Revolution/Terror. Virtual Revolutions deals with the real
and the virtual transformations that the so-called 'digital revolution' has
effected in the fields of art, society and politics. With its emphasis on
an exchange between artists for East and West Europe, Virtual Revolutions
will pay special attention to the transformation of cultures and identities
in Europe that are taking place between the 'technological', the 'virtual'
and the 'real social revolutions' of the 1990s.

The theme of the Rotterdam workshop, the Doppelgaenger Revolution, raises
the question of personal identities in virtual environments. In a week of
brainstorming and hands-on workshop sessions, the participants will be able
to explore and share their ideas about selves, others, avatars and agents
in virtual environments. Treading the line between high & low tech, we will
be experimenting with networked environments as sites of agency and of
artistic collaboration. (The workshop is being prepared with the
participants by means of a special mailing list.)

VR @ V2_ is organised by V2_Organisation, Rotterdam, NL and coordinated by
Andreas Broeckmann <abroeck@v2.nl> with special support from Anne Nigten
<anne@v2.nl>, manager of the V2_Lab.
