Syndicate: Glassbox in Paris

Dear Syndicalists,

just back from Paris, here's some raw meat: at
<http://www.icono.org/glassbox/> you'll find the website of Glassbox, an
independent art space in Paris. Due to the incredibly hierarchized
structure of official cultural support, which is so typical for France,
independent activities - like Glassbox - are not likely to be found in this
country.

Yes, it *does* exist; I myself didn't believe it - and I was all the more
happy to see that at least there are *some* independent activities in
Paris, the heart of the beast ;-)

There is also "Local Access", in the 15, rue Martel, 75010 Paris, Tel +331
- 47.70.12.00, which is run by another group of people, critics,
photographers, architects etc... they have a good space in the basement of
rue Martel, and are currently preparing the space. It won't be only art
exhibits, but also film screenings, independent journal presentations,
discussions... until now they don't have a web site, but they certainly
will have one soon...

Best, Inke

WHO WE ARE

GLASSBOX is a new venue in the Parisian cultural scene. This space, run by
an association of artists, has an open policy towards all forms of
contemporary art.

The space is situated in the heart of the 11th arrondissement of Paris, an
ideal location because of its growing popularity and artistic diversity.
Just as with contemporary art, the area is currently
undergoing major change and development. The combination of this space and
its vibrant surroundings will undoubtedly prove to be mutually beneficial.

The space, measuring some 120 m2, was designed by the French architect
Borel. This highly contemporary building lends itself perfectly to a
program of international events. Other than museums, there exist few places
in Paris such as this, which are open to the display of of contemporary art
in a contemporary context. GLASSBOX is for the moment the only one of its
type in this area of the French capital.

GLASSBOX is not simply another closeted art space for a rarified few. On
the contrary, it aims to speak to a broader public, to the inhabitants of
the area as well as to artists and followers of contemporary art.

This sort of independent; artist-run space is not the first of its kind in
Europe. In Holland, in England, Germany and Austria, there has been an
attempt to de-institutionalize art. We of GLASSBOX endorse this movement
and our objective is to bring the art of today to a public that has had
little opportunity to experience it.

All who are for the free expression for contemporary art will find place in
our program. This choice is born from our belief that it is vital to show
the cultural diversity which characterises this day and age, and to
represent the multi-cultural richness of the area.
