"Alzado Vectorial" de Rafael Lozano-Hemmer
Plaza del Zócalo, Ciudad de México, 26 de diciembre de 1999 a 6 de enero del
2000.

Accediendo a la dirección de internet http://www.alzado.net se podrán diseñar
domos de luz sobre el Zócalo Capitalino con 18 cañones robotizados que estarán
alrededor de la Plaza. Los enormes haces de luz se verán a 20 Kilómetros a la
redonda y estarán en constante movimiento respondiendo a las peticiones que
haga
la gente por la red.

El sitio web constará de un modelo del Zócalo en 3D para poder dirigir los
haces
y crear un "Alzado Vectorial", es decir, un domo geodésico de luz sobre la
Ciudad. El interfaz permitirá a la gente ver su diseño virtualmente desde
cualquier punto de vista. Cuando se envíe una petición a México, los cañones
automáticamente se orientarán para realizar el diseño del participante y tres
cámaras tomarán fotos digitales para documentarlo. Una página web se hará para
cada participante con fotos de su diseño, información y sus comentarios.

También habrá una retransmisión en vivo desde las tres cámaras de video
localizadas en la Torre Latinoamericana, en el Gran Hotel de la Ciudad de
México
y en un balcón de Palacio Nacional. El video será enviado por un software hecho
a medida para el proyecto, denominado "kyx pyx", cuyo código será
distribuido en
abierto.

La instalación "Alzado Vectorial" es una obra del artista electrónico mexicano
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, asistido por una docena de programadores, modeladores y
técnicos de cuatro países. La especialidad de Lozano-Hemmer, que él denomina
"arquitectura relacional", tiene como objeto la transformación de edificios
emblemáticos con nuevas tecnologías de interacción que permiten al público
formar parte integral de la obra. Más información sobre su obra en

La pieza estará operativa en el Zócalo de la Ciudad de México diariamente
del 26
de diciembre al 6 de enero desde el atardecer al amanecer (18:00 a 6:00 horas).
Se calcula que cientos de miles de personas podrán acceder al espacio en
Internet y millones podrán ver la pieza en vivo. Para aquellos interesados en
participar en el Alzado Vectorial y que no tengan el equipo de cómputo
necesario, se dispone de máquinas de acceso gratuito en todo México como en el
Centro Nacional de las Artes, el Museo del Papalote, el Museo de Monterrey y en
diversas bibliotecas públicas.

El 31 de diciembre la pieza no funcionará interactivamente, para dar paso a los
festejos de fin de año. A las 23:37 horas, Lozano-Hemmer seleccionará
algunos de
los diseños del Alzado Vectorial realizados hasta entonces para encadenar una
secuencia de iluminación de 7 minutos de duración con música electrónica del DJ
mexicano Bostich, del movimiento Nortec. El espectáculo íntegro del 31 de
diciembre será retransmitido por las cámaras de video del Alzado Vectorial
en el
sitio web.

celebración en la ciudad más grande del mundo.

VECTORIAL ELEVATION, Relational Architecture No. 4

A NET ARTWORK ALLOWS PEOPLE TO SEE AND TRANSFORM
THE HISTORIC CENTER IN MEXICO CITY USING
18 ROBOTIC SEARCHLIGHTS

"Vectorial Elevation" by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer
Zócalo Square, Mexico City, December 26th 1999 to January 6th 2000.

Visitors to http://www.alzado.net will be able to design domes of light
over the
Zocalo Plaza using 18 searchlights placed around the city centre. These
searchlights are powerful lightbeams that can be seen from a 10 mile radius.
They will be in constant motion showing the designs arriving from the Net.

The website will feature a 3D interface that will allow participants to point
the searchlights and design a "Vectorial Elevation", which is a geodesic light
dome over the square. The interface will allow people to see virtually their
design from any point of view. When a submission is sent to Mexico, the
searchlights will orient themselves automatically to render the participant's
design and three webcams will take pictures to document it.  A web page will be
made for each participant with photos of his or her design, information, and
comments.

A live netcast will take place using three webcams located at the
Latinoamericana skyscraper, the "Gran Hotel de la Ciudad" and the National
Palace. The video will be sent using "kyx pyx" streaming software developed
specifically for this project. This source code will be available as a free
download.

The installation "Vectorial Elevation" is a piece by Mexican media artist
Rafael
Lozano-Hemmer, in collaboration with over a dozen programmers, designers and
technicians from four countries. Lozano-Hemmer's "Relational Architecture"
projects aim to transform emblematic buildings with new interactive
technologies
that allow the public to be an integral part of the artwork. More

The piece will be running every night , dusk to dawn (6PM to 6 AM), from the
26th of December to the 6th of January. Hundreds of thousands of people will
access the piece through the net and millions will see it live in Mexico City.
For those who do not have net connectivity a number of free public
terminals are
available across the country, mostly in museums and libraries.

On the 31st of December the piece will not be running interactively in order to
accommodate the New Year's Eve celebration. At 11:37 PM, Lozano-Hemmer will
select a few of the "Vectorial Elevation" designs already done by the
participants and will make a 7 minute light show.  This show will feature music
by Mexican electronic DJ Bostich, from the Nortec scene. The entire New Year's
Eve celebration will be netcast by the site's webcams.
