<nettime> Walter Ong and a Freudian Slit

The Rev. Walter J. Ong, a Jesuit priest and a leading scholar
in the field of language and culture who traced the transition from oral to
written communication in his more than 20 books, died Tuesday ...

His most highly regarded book, for
example, is titled "Orality and Literacy: The Technologizing of the World"
(1982).

Is there a more commonly misquoted book title than this ?

And it's a book that claims that the technologizing of the word allowed, for
the first time, the faithful transmission of information.

A little cosmic joke that can serve as an epitaph for the wondeful Dr. Ong.
