Re: <nettime> John Perry Barlow R.I.P.

Assigning ideological fiber of any provenance to the swindle is going too far. It was something simpler: rehashing of the acid culture, but this time with monetizable infrastructure and centrally directed trips.

LSD was ultra cheap to make, transport and consume. If someone suggested in '60s that "Your legal concepts of property, expression, identity, movement, and context do not apply to us. They are all based on matter, and there is no matter here. Our identities have no bodies, so, unlike you, we cannot obtain order by physical coercion.", even the most depraved acid-head would think you are a f*cking idiot. Acid heads understood what the trips were and never tried to generalize even out of a single one. They were unique, private and noncommunicable.

But here was the whole industry waiting to monetize on the common, guided trips. That's all it ever was. And you thought it wasn't possible to pervert the acid culture?

They never had to pawn their pants.

JPB's stance, both in this "Declaration of Independence of Cyberspace"
and the founding of the EFF, was an almost ideal-typical representation
of the Californian Ideology, which -- in retrospect -- can be understood
as "left wing" of neo-liberalism. Like all streaks of neo-liberalism it
