STEIM presents an evening of
Heroic Systems Hacking
with Roelf Toxpeus and Joel Ryan
on Tuesday the 8th of June at 8:30pm

Roelf Toxpeus will share his experience hacking OS X with Forth! This 
exotic tongue, once the home of all things real-time and open source in 
music, seems to have been consigned to history {though it is still 
possible to cold boot any powerPC into a Forth in ROM!}. Rolf finds a 
heroic roll for Forth as a way to bypass the  convoluted habits of 
modern programming in order to get what we all really want, access to 
the highly developed libraries of device access, communications, audio 
and graphics.

If the issue is how to get a complex machine to do whatever you want 
without taking vows in a particular monastic order, then this may give 
you courage. White hat hacking like Roelf's, accesses libraries from 
the bottom most Darwin/Unix systems frameworks upwards through 
Carbon(macForths native level) to any scriptable higher level 
application. The evening will feature working examples of painless 
(ha!) roll-your-own programming for Core Audio, UDP Sprockets, 
windowless graphics and OpenGL as a model for accessing any framework. 
Plus a particularly apt example of the advantages of the multi-language 
approach, a demo of managing superCollider3 in a gui-less, server only 
mode.

Roelf Toxpeus is a founder of the Bernard Mandelbrot Conspiracy and a 
long time STEIM associate.
