SYNWORLD
May 27-31, 1999
playwork and hyperspace
Museumsquartier, Vienna

SYNWORLD
is an interactive exhibition which invites the public to discover, explore
and play with the newest virtual game worlds and simulations in electronic
entertainment, art, science and industry.

The multidimensional representation of complex structures and content is
of
central importance to the world of tomorrow. Increasing data capacities of
digital applications require new interfaces for spatial navigation within
complex environments and new approaches to information architecture.
Educational games and productive work as games will acquire increased
importance in the media hybrids of the future.

The latest developments in hypermedia worlds and computer-aided
simulations
confront us with divergent future scenarios:
Will inventive design in simulations lead to new worlds of experience?
Will
simulated cities as dynamic models of urban planning allow for new forms
of
human interaction?
What is the appeal of computer and video games? Can the fascination with
computer games be applied to learning and work environments?

Artists are increasingly occupied with the use of hypermedia narrative
structures, the design of participatory virtual environments, and the
technologies of complex systems.
SYNWORLD presents an exhibition featuring the works of important artists
working in these fields.

With presentations from exhibitors and games from numerous fields of
applications such as high-tech entertainment, science and art, SYNWORLD
appeals to a youth-oriented and a broader public and an audience of
specialists.

SYNWORLD's lecture series invites participants from industry, research and
the arts to discuss the implications of virtual systems of representation
and to hypothesize future scenarios.

SYNWORLD is organized by Public Netbase, The Institute for New Culture
Technologies in Vienna, in cooperation with the Architektur Zentrum Wien,
under the auspices of the Austrian Chancellorship and the City of Vienna.

Program:
The exhibition is open from May 27-31, 1999, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
daily.
The detailed symposium and educational program will be available as of
March 1999.

Switch is the new media art journal of the CADRE
Institute of the School of Art and Design at San Jose
State University. It is published on the Web three
times annually.

We are interested in fostering a critical viewpoint on
issues and developments in the multiple crossovers
between art and technology.

Our main focus is on questioning and analyzing as
well as reporting and discussing these new art forms
as they develop, in hopes of encouraging dialogue and
possible collaboration with others who are working
and considering similar issues.

Switch aims to critically evaluate developments in
art and technology in order to contribute to the
formation of alternative viewpoints with the
intention of expanding the arena in which new art and
technology emerge.

An Experimental and Eclectic Art Forum by Tomi Paasonen and Yannis Adoniou

DECEMBER 18-20, 1998

Each evening offers the same program of 3 theatrical dance pieces, an
indie
film screening and art exhibition:

"MegaHz" explores miscommunication in the fast-paced, channel-surfing
digital
age. "Distination Dreamland" is an urban scary-tale about an alienated
fairy
who escapes into the world of her dreams to search for her true hero, the
prince. "4 Short Pieces" is a journey through colors, sound, motion and
still-life that studies the emotions of the subconscious, mating, euphoria
and
loss.

A screening of films will follow the live performances. Films directed by
Evann
Siebens, Yannnis Adoniou, Tomi Paasonen, Mira Popova, David J. Thomas,
Dona
Mosher, Paul Rowley and Tom Gleeson.

A gallery salon will be open all evening featuring the works of local
artists

Genetically modified organisms (GMO) are under fire. But the
multinational firms which make up the genetic-industrial complex -
like the military-industrial complex we used to talk about before -
are hiding behind all sorts of committees of "experts", most of
which they have infiltrated in their efforts to dodge questions
from a worried public. Is it acceptable to play with living things
in order to increase profits? And can the heads of public research
establishments, and the ministers they report to, continue to back
this complex through ignorance, thoughtlessness or self-interest?

HOW LEFT IS LEFT IN EUROPE?

The debate about the relationship between the end (the
transformation of society) and the means (the compromises dictated
by economic "realism") has long been a favourite in left-wing
circles. The appearance of several left-leaning governments in
Europe - in Britain, France, Italy and Germany - has generated a
flood of articles analysing the differences between their various
     approaches. (By Serge Halimi *.)

  New Centre, Third Way

      by Daniel Bensad

Gerhard Schrder's victory in the German elections suggested that
good news might be at hand: the end of our winter of
neo-liberalism, to be replaced by a spring of social democracy. A
"neo" socialism is on the way - remodelled, neo-Labour and
neo-Keynesian. However, it is not a new left. What it calls itself
is a Third Way (in the UK) and a New Centre (in Germany). Leaving
aside national differences and variations, this Third Way or New
Centre is turning its back on classic social democratic policies
and any sort of neo-Keynesian model.

  Closet reformism in the UK

      by Seumas Milne

Eighteen months after Tony Blair brought an end to almost two
decades of "New Right" Conservative government, it is gradually
becoming apparent that "New Labour" is not quite as new as the
British prime minister and his allies would like us to believe. As
the rhetorical dust has settled, we are seeing modest debts being
paid to Labour's social-democratic traditions but no repudiation of
the Thatcher legacy. Blair insists this combination is vindicating
evidence of the Third Way fusion of social-democracy and liberalism
that he is determined to bring about. But whether such a concoction
can survive the pressures of the next few years is another
     question.

This summer the Truth and Reconciliation Commission has been
sitting in a discreet Capetown building trying to uncover the
secrets of the apartheid regime's covert programme of chemical and
biological warfare, drugs and the rest of its evil arsenal. Will
the memories of this dreadful time be forgotten by coming
generations? It seems not, for this crime against humanity - as
racial segregation has been recognised - stands along with Nazi
Germany in the 20th century's record of shame.

The coalition government led by Abderrahman Youssoufi marks a
significant break after more than 30 years of a conservative regime
which has frequently and ferociously repressed all progressive
forces. Although its margin for manoeuvre seems narrow, with
several major ministries still under the direct control of the
Palace, there are hopes that things are finally going to change in
a country where inequalities are still immense.

SOVEREIGNISTS IN LOVE WITH THE AMERICAN MODEL

Quebec's PQ worn out by power

      by Christophe Wargny

The debate in Quebec over sovereignty is never-ending. As long as
the issue remains unresolved, it will continue to eclipse all
others, both in Ottawa and in the province of Quebec. Its prime
minister, Lucien Bouchard, has just announced an early election
and, if the ruling Parti qubcois wins, there could be a new
referendum on self-determination; the last one was narrowly
defeated in 1995. But if he carries on with economic policies as
conventional as those of the federal government, he will have a
hard time convincing the electorate that a sovereign Quebec is
     desirable.

As the dominant discourse would have it, the economic world is a
pure and perfect order, implacably unrolling the logic of its
predictable consequences, and prompt to repress all violations by
the sanctions that it inflicts, either automatically or - more
unusually - through the intermediary of its armed extensions, the
IMF and the OECD. And in the vision of today's accountants, this

FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CUBAN REVOLUTION

  Castro's own recipes

      by Manuel Vsquez Montalbn

As December 1958 drew to a close, Batista's army buckled under the
onslaught of Fidel Castro's bearded guerrilla fighters. The record
of Cuba's revolution over the last 40 years shows great
achievements in education and public health, but failures in regard
to individual freedom, agriculture and the economy. Much of the

In the night of 9 February 1998 a hit squad opened fire with
machine guns and grenade launchers on a main street in the old
quarter of Tbilisi. The target was Eduard Shevardnadze. The
Russians were the immediate object of accusations - later
withdrawn. What Mr Shevardnadze is actually facing is a resurgence
of the problem of the Mingrelians, the great losers in the history
of the South Caucasus. But that is not to say that Georgia does not
have problems with its other regions too.

In recent years there has been a phenomenal growth in the use of
e-mail. This encourages brief exchanges and conversations in the
form of letters. And it hugely increase the mass of available
information. Which is both fascinating and unsettling. Fascinating
because it means that great transformations for education and
training are within reach. Unsettling because it suggests a world
which could become dehumanised and open to manipulation. Two
writers, both with Nobel prizes for literature, reflect on the new
     technology.

________________________________________________________________

When I talked to Valery Grancher about this idea just quizz as artwork,
I have no idea how quizz can be artwork. So I was trying with no
confidence.

But I was thinking , if artwork is different from craftwork, it's in the
ide
a of question , not only avantgardes.
I was thinking about Caravaggio's doughting St.thomas or Abbas
Kiarostami's
amazing films.
And it seems to me that many interesting works in the web happen around
idea
of questions.
Particularly I was thinking about the relation between media and question
th
rough last show in candy factory.

* Mouchette is a translated Robert Bresson's film into web.
For me, she is trying this difference movie/web . So she lost idea of
time,
she can commit suicide every Christmas. She never grow up to 13. she says
"C
'est Moi." Can you believe?

*And John Miller's works about TV game show " Alive with Pleasure"
Maybe this my misreading is embarrassed him.
Quizz as artwork.
Of course , for his work , quizz is not important.
He used most generalized avantgarde's way very simply like Robert Smithon
.
He did "cut and paste", but not from nature, from TV as second nature,
famo
us game show in U.S " Price is Right"
Then he made to show our unconscious religion. HOW MUCH THIS?

I just felt if we can do something interesting art work in this media,
not through constructed digital images.
I felt some boring on mimetic technique revival in this medium.
That's just craftwork I called. ( not meant techno-pop band )
So If this media get more popularity, we'll see another Mike Kelley using
3d
as common.

I thought webworks originate in phone communication more than digital
images.
So in the last show I tried to put a work about phone on the phone line ."
E
ntangled Simile"
Harras me more!! Japan 03 3530 6547

*Valery Grancher started "Project?" immediately, his few questions meant
"wh
o am I?"
He leaves his identy from the beginning. Because he always is a thief.
He is stealing stereotyped landscape, taking picture or another website.
"who am I?" is most popular theme for 20 century's stories.
So bringing this second hand theme in the web makes to see instantly the
sto
ry lost meaning.
Also we can't be a schizophrenic in double-bind, also we lost
nationality/li
terature.
Am I Bouvard ? Is he Pecuchet?

*G.H.Hovagimyan says " I love America "
He fucked up form of statement/slogan to be meaningless in his web site.
It remind me Kenneth Burke's theory "counter-statement".
Every slogan makes same statement.
Because form of statement/slogan is an ideology.
G.H changed conceptual art into personal instructions and drive it to
his/y
our toilet.
I like to built a signboard written "slogan!!" with him.

________________________________________________________________

Are we the same?

G.H.Hovagimyan

________________________________________________________________

*And I asked to join to Rainer Ganahl who is known by learning language
project.
He made a reversal colonialism through his performance.
In his signboard written
" please teach me your language"
I heard he is preparing new work about dialect for his home country, I'm
ver
y curious.

We're probably trying some kind of translation.
Like Wittegenstein seid, each word doesn't have meaning, we just have some
r
ule of each everyday game.

On the web, I think this question looks like one of translated sculpture
