Speciaal radioconcert voor VPRO Radio 4 ‘Café Sonore’

In het kader van het symposium ‘Ars Acustica’ dat de VPRO Radio 
organiseert, biedt STEIM dinsdag 9 maart
een concert aan van Michel Waisvisz, Daniel Schorno, Ayelet Harpaz en 
Jodi Gilbert.

Michel Waisvisz heeft als componist en performer van live elektronische 
muziek nieuwe manieren ontwikkeld om het fysieke gebaar te verenigen 
met elektronische muziek. In de door STEIM geproduceerde Kraakdozen in 
de zeventiger jaren (sinds kort weer verkrijgbaar !) deed hij dit door 
letterlijk de elektriciteit aan te raken en daardoor een denkende 
component van een machine te worden. Ook was hij één van de eersten die 
met (vaak zelf ontwikkelde) synthesizers op het podium stond.
Waisvisz’ werk staat in het teken van de levende elektronische 
podiumkunsten, waarbij de musicus/performer door fysieke handelingen 
geluiden genereert, oproept en bewerkt. De instrumenten die hij 
daarvoor bij STEIM ontwikkelde worden dan ook gestural controllers 
genoemd: De Handen, Het Web, etc. In zijn 30-jarige carrière als 
componist en musicus heeft hij bekendheid gekregen als internationale 
pionier in de live elektronische muziek. Zijn oeuvre gaat van 
muziektheater tot zingende theaterrobots, van wilde krakende en 
piepende tonen tot samenwerkingsprojecten met vooraanstaande solisten 
en ensembles. Michel Waivisz zal een nieuw stuk presenteren. Bekend is 
reeds dat hij daarbij ook de aloude Kraaksynthesizer uit het 
STEIM-depot heeft gehaald...

Daniel Schorno, Ayelet Harpaz en Jodi Gilbert “In Search of 
Transmission”

“In Search of Transmission” is een performance in liedvorm met teksten 
van Deb Olin Unferth, Jodi Gilbert, de Bornelh, bewoners van de 
Appalachen, en een tekst handelend over K's kat, uitgevoerd door Daniel 
Schorno (live-elektronica & live-sampling),
Jodi Gilbert (stem) and Ayelet Harpaz (stem & elektronica).

Twee zangeressen met een respectievelijk klassiek/hedendaagse en een 
jazz/folk/improvisatie-achtergrond verkennen door middel van tekst 
nieuwe mogelijkheden van de stem. Bij de live transformatie en 
structurering van hun materiaal maken ze gebruik van door game 
controllers aangestuurde software.

Zangeres Ayelet Harpaz schreef over de samenwerking die in 2003 begon:  
" When I began working with Jodi I enjoyed very much the fact we came 
from totally different backgrounds. This opened many possibilities, and 
once Daniel joined, everything as if came to rest in it's proper place. 
The space and sounds Daniel creates allow both Jodi and myself to 
combine our own material and blend without necessarily imitating each 
other".

Michel Waisvisz, a composer/performer of live electronic music, has 
developed new ways to achieve physical touch with electronic music 
instruments; sometimes literally touching the electricity inside the 
instruments and thereby becoming a thinking component of the machine. 
He was amongst the first to play with (often self-built) synthesizers 
on stage. Waisvisz’ work is directed towards the electronic performing 
arts, in which the musician/performer generates, triggers and 
transforms sounds through physical touch and gestures. The instruments 
that he has developed at STEIM are therefore called gestural 
controllers. In his 30-year career Waisvisz has proved to be an 
international pioneer of live electronic music.
His oeuvre ranges from music theater to sound producing robots, and 
from crackling and peeping tones to collaborative projects with 
important soloists and ensembles. Michel Waisvisz will present a new 
piece. It is also known that he fetched the old Crackle synthesizer out 
of STEIM’s storage...

Daniel Schorno, Ayelet Harpaz en Jodi Gilbert “In Search of 
Transmission”

“In Search of Transmission” is a performance in the form of possible 
songs, with texts of Deb Olin Unferth, Jodi Gilbert, the Bornelh, 
Appalachian folks and on K's cat, by Daniel Schorno (live-electronics & 
live-sampling),  Jodi Gilbert (voice) and Ayelet Harpaz (voice & 
electronics).

Two singers with respectively classical/contemporary and a jazz folk 
improvistation background, explore text to discover new possibilities 
of the voice.  For the transformation and structuring of their 
materials they are using various game controller based software, driven 
by the compositional mind behind the machine.

Here a quote by Ayelet Harpaz on that new collaboration which started 
in 2003:  " When I began working with Jodi I enjoyed very much the fact 
we came from totally different backgrounds - this opened many
