Syndicate: Candle vigils Amsterdam

Dear friends

On 29 March 1999, on Dam square (main square in Amsterdam), about
30 people came to the candle vigil organised by ABC Basisgroep Amsterdam.
The protest had four demands:
	- stop to NATO bombings
	- stop the violence against the inhabitants of Kosov@
	- introduction of International Peace Brigades in the region
	- peace on the Balkans
Copies of WRI statement were distributed. People who attended
the demonstration were mostly activists or friends from several
different countries (the Netherlands, UK, France, Norway, etc)
Unfortunatelly, on the first day we only had banners in Dutch, but it
was agreed to translate them in English and few other languages.

Dam is in the very centre of Amsterdam, so many tourists pass
there and it is easy to get their attention. It could happen that after
we translate them to English, we attract more negative comments
as well, since the general atmosphere in Netherlands is that "if you
do not support strikes, then you support the violence in Kosov@".

The vigils will continue daily from 19:00 - 20:00,
as long as the war goes on.

Vigils are also held in Entschede, and a small action was held in
Sittard, in the south of the Netherlands this weekend. Two people
climbed the roof of a summer stage in the main square, pasting
posters all over it. An article appeared in the local newspaper.

Lots of love
Vesna
